The Red Violon film concert 2024-2025

Conducted by Dina Gilbert, the OSM performs Corigliano’s Oscar Award-winning music composed for The Red Violin, a drama directed by Quebec filmmaker François Girard. A screening of the film will be presented during the concert.

Released in 1998, The Red Violin is a drama directed by Quebec filmmaker François Girard. Its story begins in 1681 in Cremona and ends in 1998 in Montreal when an appraiser happens upon the mysterious Red Violin. Dina Gilbert will conduct the OSM in a performance of John Corigliano’s Oscar-winning soundtrack.

Conductor

Dina Gilbert est acclamée par la critique pour son énergie, sa présence sur le podium et l’étendue de son répertoire. Cheffe d’orchestre principale des Grands Ballets Canadiens et directrice musicale de l’Orchestre symphonique de Kamloops (Colombie-Britannique), on reconnait son dynamisme et sa programmation audacieuse.

Dina est invitée à diriger les principaux orchestres canadiens, l’Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France et les orchestres nationaux de Lyon, des Pays de la Loire et de Metz, et de la Sinfonia Varsovia, en tournée au Japon.

Passionnée de la démocratisation de la musique classique, Dina dirige plusieurs concerts symphoniques hip-hop en France, auprès d’artistes de renom tels I AM, MC Solaar, Youssoupha, Arsenik et Bigflo & Oli. Elle a rejoint des milliers d’enfants au Canada avec ses ateliers interactifs Conducting 101 et est collaboratrice musicale à l’émission Il restera toujours la culture sur les ondes de Radio-Canada.

Récipiendaire du prix Opus « Découverte de l’année » en 2017, Dina Gilbert a été cheffe adjointe de OSM sous la direction de Kent Nagano de 2013 à 2016.

Lara St. John

Violin

Canadian-born violinist Lara St. John is described as “something of a phenomenon” by The Strad and as a “high-powered soloist” by The New York Times. She has performed as a soloist with major symphony orchestras around the world and given recitals in concert halls from New York and Lima to Berlin and Beijing. Her recording Mozart won a JUNO Award in 2011, and in 2014 her album Schubert was chosen as one of “the best CDs of spring” by Der Tagesspiegel. She began playing the violin at the age of 2, first appearing as a soloist with orchestra at 4, making her European debut at 10, and entering the Curtis Institute at 13. In 2021 Lara St. John was invested with the Order of Canada for service to society and innovations that “ignite our imaginations.” She owns and performs on the 1779 “ex-Salabue” Guadagnini
